Support HDP political prisoners.

As of today, there are 7 elected HDP MPs, dozens of elected mayors, and at least 6,000 party members and activists in prison in Turkey. The vast majority of these individuals are accused of terrorism or other anti-state offenses— simply for exercising their democratic rights. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that some of these political detentions "pursued the predominant ulterior purpose of stifling pluralism and limiting freedom of political debate."

In a democratic society, all people must have an equal chance to participate in politics. We condemn the arbitrary and politicized arrests of our members, activists, and elected officials, and call for their freedom.

The United States should:

  • Continue to advocate for our co-chair Selahattin Demirtas through the Defending Freedoms Project. Thanks to our advocacy, the US Congress officially considers Demirtas to be a prisoner of conscience, and advocates for his freedom.
  • Highlight the cases of all HDP political prisoners, and call for their release.
